Pierre Tréfouret

Pierre Tréfouret - Chief of Staff to the CNES President.

Born 15 April 1957, in Saint-Quentin.

Pierre Tréfouret was appointed Chief of Staff to the CNES President on 16 June 2014.

Pierre Tréfouret graduated with a Master’s Degree in Physics from Paris XI - Orsay University in 1979 and holds a DEA postgraduate degree in Nuclear Physics, majoring in nuclear reactors, from the INSTN national nuclear science and technologies institute in Saclay (1980).

He had been CNES’s Director of External Communications, Education and Public Relations, and a member of CNES’s Executive Committee since September 2006.

From 1981 to 1987, Pierre Tréfouret spent his early career as an engineer at IPSN, France’s nuclear protection and safety institute, at that time attached to the atomic energy agency CEA, where he worked as a researcher on nuclear reactor accidents.

From 1988 to 1991, he was in charge of planning at CEA’s strategy and evaluation department.

Then from 1991 to 1995, he was responsible for parliamentary relations within CEA’s Communications directorate and also Assistant Director from June 1994.

From June to November 1995, he was Chief of Staff to Elisabeth Dufourcq, Secretary of State for Research, before becoming Technical Advisor with responsibility for parliamentary relations for Anne-Marie Couderc, the Minister for Employment, a post he held from January 1996 to May 1997.

From June 1997 to March 1999, he was Assistant Director of Human Resources and Employment Relations at CEA, and then head of the agency’s public relations department within the Communications and Public Relations directorate from April 1999 to September 2000.

From October 2000 to April 2002, he was Special Advisor to CEA’s Administrator General.

From May 2002 to March 2004, he was Parliamentary Advisor to Francis Mer, the Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry, before joining the staff of Frédéric de Saint-Sernin, Secretary of State for Land Planning, as Deputy Chief of Staff from April 2004 to May 2005.

And from June 2005 to August 2006, he was Advisor to François Goulard, Minister for Higher Education and Research, before joining CNES as its Director of External Communications, Education and Public Relations.

Pierre Tréfouret is a Navy Reserve Captain, Knight of the Legion of Honour, Officer of the National Order of Merit, and holder of the National Defence Medal (bronze) and the Gold Medal for Voluntary Military Services.

He is also the author of Europe et Océans, théâtres pour la défense de la France (Europe and Oceans: theatres for the defence of France), published in 1987.
